Laser game

Language: C#

Goal: Eliminate all enemies and collect secret documents to complete the level

Gameplay: Scout the area, determining enemies positions and behaviours, set up a laser machine, program the path it has to follow and shoot. Be careful, the new technology is quite undeveloped and its slow speed might give away your position to the guards. They won't think twice before killing you.

Role in the team: Design of the first level, designing player and partly enemy behaviour, programming of laser, player and partly enemies elements. Creating visual feedback.

Laser game was not given a proper name during the development. It was a team project where the brief had only two requirements: base it on a decade between 1900 and 1970 and make it 2D. Our team decided to make a game about cold war and give a player a role of a Russian spy with an innovative weapon whose task was to steal secret papers from an American military base.

Our main mechanic was a laser, where a player was able to draw a certain path, sending the laser into the darkness behind the corner. We wanted them to identify the guard's positions, find a safe spot and try to clear the level or a room with a single shot or precisely planned path. We felt it would be satisfying to get it perfect, however, it required well-thought level design and interesting guards behaviour. Both elements turned out to be quite challenging, from both programming and design perspectives. Although the game is not quite polished and lacks a lot of elements we wanted to include, it still was a great experience which taught us the importance of time management and player testing.
