Single-player board game
Goal: Survive on an island for 10 days.
Gameplay: Explore the island using dice, gather resources and craft tools to survive different events.
It is a first second year project, which indicates the increase of complexity of games we are developing straight away.
The game is still under development but already went through a lot of iteration and testing. A lot of features were removed from the initial idea as they were adding unnecessary complexity.
Board games add a lot of limitations, as gameplay has to be manageable by players, so rules should be added very carefully. Also, since it has to be a single-player game, the system itself has to be challenging and engaging enough as the benefits of social play cannot be used.
The game heavily relies on random elements to ensure replayability: the island is constructed from a deck of location cards. The moves are indicated by a dice roll and events also are drawn from a deck of cards. The player has to survive by mainly ensuring he always has food and water.
Initially, the game had two sets of events: day and night events and the last could be skipped by passing the night. The player also had possibility to leave his tools and resources on certain tails. However, after testing it was clear that even without those features the game is complex enough for one player to manage.
